Understanding Children's Drawings - Why Children's Art Matters

You need to give children a lot of attention to understand what they are drawing in their world

Scribbles will be done from a young age and are very important

Scribbles will be found wherever a child plays

They reveal the child's world and eventually build up into meaning

Art is like playing to them and doesn't need to be taught

By 4 years old a design is created and it is a turning point in the development

by 5 years old the picture emerges in their mind

4 year olds - lines more straight and relate them to the page and do their design

5 year olds - the child has the picture in his/her mind

Children should be told not to copy other children’s work

Playschool teaches children how to go from scribbles to important elements

Dots convoy feeling from rhythm

If the child has a picture in their mind, the drawing is easily identified

During kindergarten we see the child move from scribbles

Children are alert to rhythm and movement

Not yet able to tell us the meaning of the painting at age 3

At 3 1/2 they are holding the crayon firmly, movement of the arm is controlled

At the age of 4 begins to organize the lines

At age 5 they can draw the picture in their mind onto the paper

children's artistic development can be seen in their drawings

children are born with the ability to scribble

children enjoy being creative with colour and paint

drawings have more purpose and meaning at an older age

children are aware of rhythm and movement which can be seen in their drawings

children hold crayons firmly in their hand from 3 and a half

children choose their colours very carefully

scribbles develop into a story picture from 3-5 years
