Neuroscience: David Eagleman: The Creative Brain

Creativity is our biological mandate

Our brain is a novelty-seeking device that always reconfigure itself

Why we are a runaway species comes from creativity

There is more space between input and output

A bigger prefrontal cortex-this stimulates 'what ifs' or the future

Art evolves over time

Our brain is a novelty-seeking device

What goes into the human brain gets mashed up

We must reshape shapes to create a new shape - new things

The brain learns to use the body by testing out different things

A lot of variation in society

Human brain constantly spitting out mash-up world we experienced

The creativity you see in arts and sciences, exact same cognitive processes, basic operations

Divide into 3 bending, breaking, blending cognitive processes

We take ideas, bend in size shape, make variations on a theme, breaking them down, multiple ideas seen you smush together

Constant building on past, to bend, break and blend stuff from now and before

Not just out of blue, every idea has a clear genealogy

All ideas evolve, everything has a history to it

Everything that sticks its always in tug war novelty and familiarity

We want novelty but we need familiarity, this is what drives everything that sticks in society

Change and unfamiliarity can suppress creativity

Skeuomorphism, digital icons represent something physical in the world

Umbilical cord to the familiar, digital age but what reminds of us what was e.g., Trash can for bin

Need fact but dabble in fiction this where arts allow us to play

Good ones come to consciousness

Clash ideas create new ideas
