General Aim of activity – What will the final outcome be? ie. ‘To make an aeroplane with cardboard’ box.

Making a boat using cork tops.

Specific Learning outcomes of the activity – What will be learned by doing the activity? Ie. ‘To use fine motor skills using the scissors’

To use their fine motor skills when cutting the foam with the scissors and sticking the toothpick into the cork.
Learn about floating and sinking objects.
Steps for making or doing activity:
Use images with short captions

You get 3 corks and lay them side by side securing them together with elastic bands. You then get your foam sheet and cut out a sail shaped piece of foam. Using your toothpick, pierce the foam at the top and the bottom and placing on the toothpick. Stick the toothpick into the middle cork and place the boat on water to see it float.

How will the child/ren benefit from the activity?

The children will improve their motor skills, both gross and fine.
The child will experience sensory skills when touching the various materials.
Communication skills.
Age group/s: (development level)

From 3 years old and upwards.

How would you make the activity more inclusive? Principles of universal design

Size and space is appropriate for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of a child’s size, posture, or mobility. Flexible design accommodates a wide range of use by children with varying abilities and preferences.

How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside?

Using a leaf as a sail for the boat and a stick for the pole.

Simplify this activity:

Pre-cut the sails and let the children choose what one they want and you could have the corks already elasticated for the young children.

Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity? ‘Marbling using foam or egg whites instead’

Instead of cork, you could use styrofoam pebbles that you get as insulation in a box as these float and are similar in size.
