Types of Expression in Meaning Making



The human being is capable of so many forms of expression; consciously and unconsciously

If we work with expression we work with meaning

Expressions can be looked a communications perspective: If expressions are looked at, in this way, they can be used to understand the maker's intentions. 


  • How do they see and experience the world? 
  • What meaning have they applied to this?
  • Is this the same meaning you understand? 
  • How does this fit with personal, societal and cultural norms?


Expressions as a process of discovery towards meaning making: Process orientated expression - not concerned with end product  


Body - Fitness as an expression, clothes as expression. Movement - dance - ballet, modern, sport - gymnastics, body language, acting - mime, Skin - Tattoos, Piercing. Hair - Colour and Style - Play; Face- shows emotions and relates meaning;

Mouth: Breath - first breath to last - expression of life, rhythm; Voice - song - speaking; conversation, debate, public, etc -verbalizing poems and stories; Acting - out and in; Languages; Personal - emotions, thinking. Taste: food

Eyes: movement - engaged and disengaged; recognising and responding to colour, observation, Personal - perspectives and expectations on what they expect to see

Hands: Writing - Poems, stories, academic, letters, blogs, reflective writing

Ear: Listening to music and responding, Listening to others and responding,

Spiritual: Religion - tradition, rituals - personal  - prayer, belief
Hands: Creating - objects of Art, cooking, woodwork, fixing objects, products, music, interior design - understanding colour, pattern etc.  

Collections: Exhibitions are also creations, collecting things,
