DIY Lava Lamps

 

Aim: To make a DIY lava Lamp

Objectives:

• To use oil and water to demonstrate how oil and water separate; with oil floating to the top over water.
• To use colour and light to create a beautiful effect
• To use a *Alka-seltzer  or other **substance to create bubbles that travel through the oil and water 
• *(Caution: contains Asprin. not to be handled by the children)
• **(sodium Hydrogen Carbonate or baking soda)

Materials: plastic bottle, vegetable oil, ink or food colouring, water and a torch.

Instructions: 

1. fill plastic bottle with water to the half way point
2. Add the ink or food colouring; be careful not to add too much as the colour will be too dense. 
3. Add oil to the bottle
4. Add the Alka-seltzer and watch the bubble rise through it.
