General Aim of activity – What will the final outcome be‘To make an aeroplane with cardboard’ box.
To create a flower using basic home materials
Specific Learning outcomes of the activity – What will be learned by doing the activity? I.e. ‘To use fine motor skills using the scissors’
The children will be expanding on their creativity skills as they see household object being used for art. They will also be using their fine motor skills to hold the paint brush and to put the rubber bands around the straw.
Steps for making or doing activity:
• Gather equipment and materials required
• Cut end two holders for eggs off the carton so you are left with just four
• Even out around the edges
• Cut off point in the middle of carton
• Using one of the spare holders cut off bottom so you are left with 2D circle
• Glue 2D circle onto the part of the carton you cut the point off, covering the hole
• Grab a bundle of aprox. 8 straws, tie a rubber band around the top, middle and bottom of the bundle
• When straws are secured use masking tape to tape straws onto the back of the carton
• Place the straws in the centre and place masking tape diagonally and horizontally over back of carton
• Paint your flower, do not apply to much paint around masking tape as it will loosing the stem
How will the child/ren benefit from the activity?
The children will benefit from this activity as they learn about flowers and as they look at a new idea of art that is not your typical paint brush and paper. They will learn how to manipulate different objects to create a piece of art. They will also be expanding mainly on their fine motor skills as they cut, pick up, paint and glue.
Age group/s: (development level)
3 years and up
How would you make the activity more inclusive? Principles of universal design
I would make this activity more inclusive by getting the children to carry out the activity in pairs of two; this will allow them to broaden on their communication skills while getting to know their peers better.
How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside?
This activity could be carried out outside with the exact same procedure.
Simplify this activity:
This activity could be simplified by having the preparation part done already so the children only have to make the stem and paint the flower.
Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity? ‘Marbling using foam or egg whites instead’
Instead of using masking tape you could use glue to secure the stem to the back of the carton
