Use soda crystals (sodium carbonate) to fix tie-dye.  It is common to pre-soak the T-shirts in a soda crystal solution before applying the dye. This helps the dye bond more effectively with the fabric, making the colours brighter and more permanent.

How to Pre-soak:

  1. Mix the solution: Dissolve 1 cup of soda crystals in 1 gallon of warm water.
  2. Soak the T-shirts: Submerge them in the solution and let them soak for 15-30 minutes.
  3. Wring out excess water: After soaking, wring out the excess solution. The T-shirts should be damp but not dripping.
  4. Apply the dye: Once the T-shirts are pre-soaked, you can proceed to apply your tie-dye colours.

The pre-soak step with soda crystals helps the dye penetrate the fabric fibres and ensures a more vibrant and lasting result.
