General points:
The white board can be a excellent tool to aid teaching and ultimately learning. It offers an excellent opportunity to engage in the act of mark making without the 'commitment' to paper.
For some learners the finality of the mark- making process can inhibit engagement with the process. The freedom to express oneself without this restriction can be liberating and less threatening.
Using the white board for teamwork
- Collective space for focus on and shared table space/ownership
- Less risky in terms of writing things down - can be wiped away.
- There is no right way up - all member of the group can engage in the collective space from all sides
- More risk taking
- More engagement
- Everyone 'sees' what needs to be seen
- Words as well as objects/images/doodles can be used
- The group process can be recorded via a photo
- Immediately inclusive
- Interaction between members
- Brainstorming is visual and a shared experience
- Group Creativity and imagination
- Images provide starting points for the story
- Fun activity
- Individual contribution to group process
- Whiteboard provides a lower risk of mistakes as it can be rubbed out.
Instructions:
Each member chooses an image from a large selection. All the group members gather around the table with the whiteboard. The members decide the theme or the beginning of the story by looking and discussing the images chosen. Ideas can be written on the board and interacted with such as lines drawn and links made. The story has a beginning, middle and an end. There needs to be an issue or a problem but it can be fun and nonsensical.
